- Secondary to chronic kidney disease – excess accumulation of poorly mineralized osteoid
- Rarely due to primary hyperparathyroidism – exaggerated osteoblastic response following bone resorption
- Affects axial skeleton
- Endplates preferentially involved in vertebral bodies. Dense bones adjacent to endplates with central band of lower normal bone density. This striped pattern is called ‘rugger jersey’ spine
